Introduction of the Hanok Heritage Preservation Division

Seoul Metropolitan Government has established and is currently implementing a 10-year policy for the preservation of hanok (a total of 4,500 buildings) in Seoul.
In order to support a portion of the repair and rebuilding expenses for hanok, the city operates an assistance and loan business (maximum KRW 100,000,000) according to the type of hanok building in areas where hanok are concentrated (Bukchon, West side of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insa-dong, Donhwamun-ro, and nearby Unhyeongung Palace), so as to minimize the unbridled destruction of hanok and preserve the unique scenery of hanok villages. In addition, by purchasing and repairing both hanok and other structures in those areas and entrusting the private sector with their management, it is striving to revive hanok, which is actively used in efforts to preserve and promote traditional Korean culture.
