Traditionally, folk paintings portrayed thejoys, sorrows, and hopes of common people in Korea. Some used them for decorative purposes, while others hung them on the wall to drive away evil spirits. Whatever the purpose may be, folk paintings characterized by unconventional composition and color combination have always been recognized for being the one form of art that best represents Korea and also the most modern painting concept in the country. It’s for this reason that they’re continuously exhibited in other countries as well.

 

Gahoe Museum has both exhibition halls and a room for patrons to try some of the unique painting techniques, so they can understand the humor and satire that the folk paintings are meant to portray while learning to paint one.
